sunday nights

My favorite night of the week hands down. Since we’ve just had daylight savings and the sun has long set by the time we start on dinner, turn on the Frank Sinatra and here you have it. In the glow of fall, I love lighting candles and setting out to make a meal. No matter what the week may hold, Sunday nights are a reset from the busyness of the weekend, a time to come to the table and look forward to the week ahead.

Off season has commenced over here and a lot has happened. The season ended with a bang in Japan, and Neilson and I spent some time exploring Tokyo after the race finished. Before coming back home, we stopped in Spain for a wedding. Jet lag hit me pretty hard and for most of this week I’ve been waking up at 6am, getting in a full two hours of reading before the sun has risen. Combined with a lot of time spent on planes or waiting in airports, I’ve been knocking out quite a few books. Some faves would be… The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, Tastes Like War, Nora Goes Off Script.

The days here are still warm, but the spirit in the air and changing foliage are markers of the changing season around us. This is the first fall in six years I have spent outside California. It’s interesting how the changing of seasons and certain holidays feel like markers of your progression through life. I have distinct memories of Halloween and birthday parties in the end of October with friends, the start of rehearsal for Nutcracker season, and the impending Thanksgiving feast that everyone prepares their dish for weeks ahead. Making new traditions is hard, because the first year of something is never a tradition. But change is also hard and sometimes we need the excitement of new things to help us get through seasons

Since we’ve been back, there’s been time to tackle unpacked bags, and address unfinished corners. Making a home feel its most functional can only happen by breaking it in with every meal and making little adjustments as you go. We’ve also taken the extra time to do some local exploring. We rented a car to go for a hike one afternoon, which ended up being a bust due to clouds blocking all visibility. But we took advantage of having a car to explore the hilltop village of Éze, which has been on my wishlist for a while now. It’s only a 25 min drive from Nice, but a little complicated to get to by train/bus since it’s up the hill.

Favorite things lately:

  • a cup of tea and a good book in the late afternoon sun

  • Gathering foliage to bring the outside fall colors in

  • cacio e pepe- a lunchtime favorite that requires little more than pantry basics

  • goodreads- always looking for recs for a good book and seeing what my friends are up to

  • La Cave du Fromager - a cozy, literal underground cave with natural wines and yummy, seasonal plates

Here are some photos of life lately, soaking up autumn colors and cozying up with a book and cup of tea in the afternoon light.
